Make sure you’re pulling the straps at the right angle. If you pull them so they’re running parallel they’ll tighten easily. If you pull them at a different angle they’ll be much harder to tighten. If your carrier is brand new you may also find the straps are a bit stiffer. If that is the case, spending a bit of time running them back and forward through the buckle will help to soften them.

Knee position is not a safety issue. As long as little one has clear airways and is held securely, so they can’t slump, they are safe. Look at little one’s position when held in arms. Does he curl his knees up or is he quite straight? There are lots of reasons why baby may be straighter and also things you can do to encourage a more comfortable/ergonomic position for them: 1) Think about how you’re holding little one in your arms. Are they held across their back or under their bottom? If you can support them under their bottom, their body is likely to curl in towards you. This gives a gentle curve to their spine and their knees will naturally curl up. 2) Similarly, when bringing the carrier up over baby’s back, slide the panel from under their knees, up to their shoulders (as shown). You don’t need to support their bottom or back - just lightly rest your hand against their shoulders to support them while you do the carrier up. 3) Once you’ve put baby in, the key checks are: does baby have clear airways with carrier top edge no higher than earlobes? Are they held securely so they can’t slump? Once you’ve checked these don’t instantly feel you need to adjust positioning too, unless baby is unsettled. Check they look comfy (eg legs aren’t going backwards, back isn’t arching) then go for a little walk around the room. Babies like movement! If you do want to adjust their knee/leg position you can gently adjust to bring the knees higher and round in towards you (as shown). As said above, this can help to give a gently curve to their spine and allows their head to naturally rest against you. It also takes any pressure off their tummy which - especially if they’ve just fed - is likely to be more comfy for them. Hope that all helps! Thanks for your question. So first of all, take your time. Then here are a few tips: Try to support baby under their bottom, rather than across their back. This may feel counter-intuitive but - if supported under their bottom - their knees will likely tuck up and they'll curl their body against you. If you support them across their back or tummy, their legs and head will go backwards and they'll be hard to support. I find using my chin to gently support baby's head, while supporting them with one hand under their bottom, can help too. You may find sitting down to do this the first few times will help, as you can lean slightly backwards (which helps support baby against you). Make sure you slide the panel of the carrier up from the waistband - over their bottom, their back, then up to their shoulders. This means you're supporting them at all times. When holding them in the carrier - before doing it up - rest your hand across their shoulders, rather than holding them under their bottom or across their back. This will help them feel secure. Thanks for your question. So for the first 3-4 months babies generally curl up with their knees above bottom but knees no wider than hip width. It's important not to over-extend them. At around 3-4 months their muscles have developed so their legs than wrap around the wearer. Leg positioning is not a safety issue - it's more about comfort for baby and supporting them ergonomically. To achieve an optimum ergonomic position want to ensure that baby has a decent pelvic tuck, so they have a gentle curve to their spine (I'll link to my video going into this in detail below). Their knees will then be above their bottom, with knees around baby's hip-width apart. Their lower leg should hang straight down and be able to swing freely. If you need to move the zip a little way to support them like this (e.g. if baby is very long for their age) then you can move it a small way across. Maybe an inch (2.5cm) or so. If you're not sure whether to make it wider or not, it is better for the carrier to be a little too narrow than too wide. It is really important not to over-extend baby's legs. Hope that helps! Hi! Thanks for your question. My suggestion would be to try it on the newborn setting first of all. Then the following adjustments may be needed, depending on how big your 3 month old is: You may need to make the velcro adjuster slightly wider (probably adjusted to between the first and middle setting). Ideally the carrier should fit from one knee to the other, so the lower leg swings freely. Depending on how tall you are and how tall baby is, you may need to sit the waistband a little lower on your body than is shown in the video here. The lower the waistband sits. the taller the panel will be over baby's back. You'll still want to ensure it comes up to the nape of baby's neck. You may also want to undo the piece that's done up behind baby's neck and flip it over onto the outside. This piece closes the gap behind baby's neck when they're newborn but may not be needed at 3 months. Hope that helps!

Hi Olga, Thanks for your question. So the reason no one really mentions the numbers is, unfortunately, they're fairly meaningless as it all depends on how long baby's torso is (not how tall they are overall). For a newborn, the important thing is that the top edge of the carrier (when folded) comes up to the bottom of baby's earlobe but no higher. Once baby has head control (around 4 months old) the top edge of the panel can sit lower but must be at least to baby's armpits. If your baby is newborn, start with the panel adjusted to the shortest setting. Try the carrier with baby (they'll be facing inwards at this stage). If the top edge (when folded) comes up to the bottom of their earlobe then this is the right height for them. If the carrier is too low over their back, you can make it slightly longer. If the carrier panel is too tall, you'll need to wait until baby has grown a little. For facing outwards, baby needs to have full head control and be at least 5 months old. They can then either have arms inside the carrier (coming out through the gaps) or over the top edge. If they have arms out, you want to ensure the top edge of the carrier comes up to their armpits. If they have arms in, you want to ensure the top edge of the carrier (when folded) comes no higher than their chin. It's about trying different panel heights to see what is right for your baby. I hope that helps!

Oh dear! This is very much a carrier for a specific need (e.g. after baby has had surgery to their tummy or, for whatever reason, a tummy-to-tummy carry isn't possible). Seated sideways is a harder position to achieve. If you're trying again, take your time - there's no prize for doing it quickly. You can stop after each stage/movement for fabric - have a little walk around with baby held - then progress to the next when you're ready. This will keep you calm and help to prevent you getting hot.

So the Scootababy is quite different to pretty much any other baby carrier. The closest type of carrier to it would probably be a ring sling or a pouch sling. You can use lots of different carriers for hip carries, and some you can combine two carriers, wearing one on either side. However the specific method shown here is for the Scootababy. With different carriers the method would also be different. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your feedback. The demo doll used is a newborn doll size and is the average size of newborns I see at the shop each day. All babies vary in torso length. If your little one is sitting too low in the carrier, wear the waistband higher. This will shorten the panel height (as some of the fabric will sit between you and baby before coming up over their back). The higher the waistband is, the shorter the panel height will be. Thanks for your question. All Ergobaby carriers have been certified hip healthy by the Hip Dysplasia Institute. In fact Ergobaby were one of the pioneers in ensuring baby's legs and hips were supported ergonomically. Used correctly, the Aerloom supports baby ergonomically, adapting as they grow. When they are little, the carrier supports them with a gentle curve to their spine, knees higher than bottom, carrier from one knee-pit to the other. The carrier panel gives a lovely 'scoop' to support baby in an ergonomic position. As they grow and develop the carrier becomes wider, to continue to support their legs knee-to-knee, and supports their spine development accordingly (so when they achieve full head control, when they start sitting, when they crawl and when they walk, their spine position will change). Obviously I'm demoing with a doll - not a real baby - and dolls aren't quite so easy to adjust to exactly the same shape as a newborn. I hope that's helped answer your question though 🙂

No, you do not need to wait until they have head/neck control. If baby is supported with a gentle curve to their spine, knees higher than bottom, and are held securely so they can't slump, their head will naturally rest against the wearer. It very much depends on the torso length of the baby but I usually find people need to move to it at around 4-6 months old. Until baby has full head control you want the top edge of the carrier to be no higher than the nape of baby's neck. Once they have full head control - usually around 3-4 months old) the top edge of the carrier can sit between their armpits (with baby's arms over the top of the carrier) and the nape of their neck. There are a couple of different height settings you can popper the front flap onto when they're in the newborn setting. So, as they grow, you set that higher. Then - when baby is too tall to fit in the newborn setting to the nape of neck (or armpits, if they've got full head control) you undo the zip. You may need to put the waistband a bit higher to begin with, to shorten the carrier panel height. Hope that helps!

Generally, an upright, tummy-to-tummy position is recommended for carrying a newborn in a stretchy wrap. This is likely to be the easiest position to achieve safely and comfortably for both you and baby. If for any reason a tummy to tummy position is not suitable - e.g surgery to baby's stomach, if baby has severe reflux and finds tummy to tummy positions uncomfortable, if parent is in a wheelchair - this position is an option. The same safety checks apply as for when baby is awake: Are they held securely? Do they have clear airways? Is chin raised off baby's chest? If you're at all unsure about using the wrap in this way, it's worth seeing your local babywearing consultant (or booking a video call with me if you don't have one locally). Hope that helps!
